How to write a cursive N

Cursive N uppercase and lowercase on ruled lines

Upstroke, down, two humps, exit right.

Lower-case n, stroke by stroke

Two humps, exit right — one fewer than m.

N in context: what teachers watch

Three humps (looks like m), or the first hump missing so it looks like r.

Where the join happens

n joins from its second hump. 'nn' in 'running', 'n' in 'in', 'an' are very common.

Questions parents ask about N

"My child writes it backwards." Reversals are common until about age eight, especially for letters with a strong vertical axis. Correct by tracing the model together, not by repeating "no, the other way".

"Should I correct every mistake?" No. Pick one thing per session — the height, the join, or the loop — and leave the rest. Correcting everything at once teaches the child that handwriting is a list of failures.

"Is it too late at this age?" Handwriting is a motor skill, and motor skills are learnable at any age. Adults who want to switch from print to cursive usually need six to eight weeks of short daily practice.

Rewriting: the fastest way to improve

After writing a line of Ns, cover the model and rewrite the same line from memory on a fresh sheet. Then uncover the model and compare the two. This "rewrite from memory, then check" cycle is the single most efficient practice method for handwriting at any age — it forces the brain to hold the shape rather than copy it, which is what permanent improvement requires.

What to check after each session

  • The letter starts and finishes in the right place (at the baseline).
  • The height matches its neighbours on the same line.
  • Every join to the next letter comes from the correct exit stroke.
  • The last line of the session looks better than the first — if not, stop and reset rather than pushing through fatigue.

Words that contain N

Trace the letter on the N worksheet (PDF), then write these words on the blank lines below.

What a correct N looks like

  • Height: stays inside the middle zone, like o and n.
  • Start and exit: begins at the baseline, ends ready to join the next letter.
  • Proportion: the loops and curves stay even across a line — uneven Ns are the first sign of rushed practice.
